
The new regulations will require cars to average 39 mpg (current average is around 25 mpg) and be phased in by 2016. While this may look like a tall order for American automakers, the Japanese automakers have been working with these fuel efficiency standards since 2007 and offer tax cuts to those who purchase these particular cars.
In this green remodeling of the car industry, which is currently facing bankruptcy, Obama hopes to both jump start the economy and move towards improving the environment. I just hope it happens by 2016 and is enforced, unlike the Kyoto Protocol.
