"Why Do you let me Stay Here"
She and Him

As a friend of mine said, "If I were a lesbo, I'd date her." The her is Zooey Deschanel, the actress from Elf. Zooey has a cabaret, throaty voice that lingers in your ears after she's gone. Good for listening to at work.

PoGo

If you know me, you know I love Polaroid film. I love the grainy quality of the film, the instant gratification and the pleasure it excites in people.

Unfortunately, Polaroid
filed for bankruptcy a few years ago and more recently announced that they are quitting the instant film business.

So, I started buying up rolls of film from ebay, clearing the shelves at CVS and conserving use. But I assumed that soon enough there will be no more instant film left on this planet.

Until, I read this: Polaroid to make new Instant Film camera!?!?!?!

It isn't released in stores until later this Spring/Summer... just in time for my birthday party!!!

Grass Fed Party

Align Center

I have previously explained why I choose to be a vegetarian. Recently, eating meat is something I have pondered over doing again, but always end up deciding against it. So, this post is for my carnivorous friends.

The Grass-fed Party is an organization of people who "support grass-fed ranching and believe that America can hold higher standards to its cattle industry." Grass-fed and Party?? I don't think two other words exist that define fun?!

The "party" is definitely one I can stand behind. They believe that the projects surrounding grass-fed beef including, humane animal treatment, strengthening the rural economy, better use of corn/grain crops, healthier meat for people, sustainable ranching, and working landscapes preservation can all be attained.

Using the internet, The Grass-fed Party connects its supporters across the country to create a community and discuss the benefits of whole foods, the economy of our rural communities, and movements within our own neighborhoods and farmland. It is a place where farmers, ranchers, community members, and bloggers can share stories and ideas.

To join the Grass-fed Party, click here. Eat responsibly.

Green before it was Hip

I wanted to mention and thank a few of the companies that have ALWAYS been eco-conscious, environmentally friendly and green, or whatever you call it.

Patagonia: a leader since 1973 in sustainable manufacturing. In fact, was founded by environmentalist, Yvon Chouinard.

Poland Spring: Making reusable, recyclable bubblers for home and office use since the 1960's.

JPMorgan: the most active bank remaining in the renewable energy sector. They invested in 54 wind farms and one solar plant since 2003.

Vermont: The Green Mountain State has always been devoted to renewable energy, animal protection and conserving the outdoors. Plus, it's my favorite state.

What else?

RIP Andy

Andy Warhol plays a huge role in my life. From his pop art to The Velvet Underground, and as an inspiration for my parties, I am obsessed with his expansive vision and ability to create.

Born Andrew Warhola on August 6, 1928, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Andy was successful at many things. He was an illustrator, a silk-screener, painter, film maker, editor of the magazine Interview and producer of the band The Velvet Underground & Nico.

22 years ago today, Andy died of complications due to gall bladder surgery. He was 58 years old.

In his book The Philosophy of Andy Warhol, Andy wrote about death: "I don't believe in it, because you're not around to know that it's happened. I can't say anything about it because I'm not prepared for it."

Andy, you've changed the way I see things. Thank you.

The problem with Coal

I am not sure how to solve the problem of coal. It is dirty; even dirtier than those windows in the red light district. I am not a fan.

However, to replace all of America’s coal-fired power plants with renewable sources of energy, it would cost nearly a trillion dollars. And, even if the we could pay such a price, China and other developing countries that rely on coal far more than we do-- could not. China is building more and more coal-fired power plants and, by 2020, will have three times as many as the United States has today. In addition, communities in Western Pennsylvania, West Virginia and other states rely solely on coal as their main source of income. What are we to do?

According to a recent study by Stanford University, the raw energy sources that are the most promising are, in order, wind, concentrated solar (the use of mirrors to heat a fluid), geothermal, tidal, solar photovoltaics (rooftop solar panels), wave and hydroelectric. He recommends against nuclear, coal with carbon capture and sequestration, corn ethanol and cellulosic ethanol, which is made of prairie grass.

I recently posted about the benefits of nuclear power. This study claims that nuclear power will lead to more terrorist activity. "Once you have a nuclear energy facility, it's straightforward to start refining uranium in that facility, which is what Iran is doing and Venezuela is planning to do," Jacobson said. "The potential for terrorists to obtain a nuclear weapon or for states to develop nuclear weapons that could be used in limited regional wars will certainly increase with an increase in the number of nuclear energy facilities worldwide.

Obviously there is not just one solution and Obama has a few tough decisions to make. He should start with creating a strong cap-and-trade program and send a clear signal to the rest of the world that we are serious about addressing climate change.

T. Boone Pickens

I made T. Boone Pickens one of my Top 10 Green stories of the year. And, I'm so glad I did- he recently started a monthly report that shows how many barrels of oil were imported the previous month.

"The goal of the Pickens Plan is to get that number going down so that we are less and less dependent on foreign oil. For example, the nearly $475 billion we sent overseas for foreign oil in 2008 could have been better spent right here in America building schools, wind turbines, solar farms and helping insulate houses and buildings."

Follow along and track the progress here.

Go West Young (wo)Man

I fantasize about moving out West, specifically Colorado, daily.

I visualize myself taking long bike rides through the mountains and breathing in the fresh, crisp air, hiking with my dog and not seeing a soul for miles, going out to my garden to pick fresh vegetables and having my best friends over for a home cooked meal. As you can see, the draw of being out West for me is the sprawling land, the freedom, the mountains in my backyard and meeting the amazing people who make it their home...

There was an article in the Times this weekend about the changing American dream.

"One dream many share is that Americans will give up their love affair with suburban sprawl and will rediscover denser, more environmentally friendly, less auto-dependent ways of living... They will ride more bicycles, have smaller homes and tinier fridges and rediscover the joys of dense community — and maybe even superior beer."

The author suggests that because of this economy, Americans are going back to more traditional roots, and in turn, a more environmentally friendly way of living. This makes me SO happy. The media has yet to report about the positive environmental draws to this economic collapse. It's about less consumption more time spent doing the things that the great outdoors offers for free ; exploring, hiking and turning over rocks were some of my favorite.

So, hopefully this is true! I just better get out there before the rest of America!

Have a Happy Valentines Day

HOW TO REALLY GET SOME THIS VALENTINE'S DAY

1) Instead of buying cut flowers like roses, buy an indoor plant. They clean the air and last a lot longer.

2) Make something! Put your thoughts into a hand-made card or poem. Offer coupons for free kisses, house chores or back rubs. Make a home-cooked organic meal.

3) If you MUST purchase a gift, make sure to buy organic and Fair Trade chocolate and recycled cards.

And good luck!

Chicken Wing Tracker

Someone recently said to me, "if I am what I eat, then I must be a chicken wing." Well, if I were a chicken wing, I'd want to come from Murray's Chicken.

They offer a system of codes that finds out where your chicken comes from and gives you information about the family that raised it.

It's a chicken tracker. Awesome.

"Murray's Chickens are raised in the heart of Pennsylvania's Lancaster countryside by a select number of family farms that embrace our vision. The royal treatment at their Pennsylvania homes meets and exceeds the guidelines as specified under the Certified Humane Raised and Handled label. Our birds have access to fresh air and sun and combine an all-natural, all-vegetable diet with plenty of healthy exercise."

Yum!

This is what I got when I tracked chicken 0028:

Mast Farm
Pine Swamp Rd, Mt Pleasant Mills 17853

Seriously, does it get better than that? Can't you see the oldest boy grabbing my buffalo wings by the neck and chopping it's head off? Priceless. To buy Murray's, use this store locator link and enjoy!!

Electronic Responsibility

What do you do with your old cell phones and computers?

If you're like 80% of Americans, you probably just toss your obsolete Startacs and old, chunky PC computers into the trash. Every day Americans throw out more than 350,000 cell phones and 130,000 computers, making electronic waste the fastest-growing part of the U.S. garbage stream.

So how do you ensure that your electronics get recycled?

First, you can buy from companies that are responsible for their products. Companies like Apple now design their laptops to be more easily recycled. Sony has pledged to work only with recyclers that pledge not to export e-waste. And Dell, which since 2004 has offered free recycling for its products (customers arrange shipping online), recently announced an in-store recycling program with Staples. To confirm that its recyclers are really recycling, Dell uses environmental-audit firms to check up on its partners. HP also offers coupons for recycling your computers. In addition, if your cell phone is still working and in good condition, you can sell it to Greenphone.com.

Also, New York City has a new recycling law; manufacturers must set up take-back programs for all their electronic products by July 2009; accepting-- at no cost to customers-- computers, mice, keyboards, printers, TV's and portable music players.

Go NYC!!!

Job Market

With the recent announcements from Macy's- saying they will cut 7,000 jobs, or 4% of its work force, Starbucks- and TV network's doing major layoffs, I think it's time for a work related post.

I read an article in Inc, Magazine about interviews and how to find a smart employee. They asked some of their Inc. 500 CEOs what some of their interview questions would be. Feel free to ask your own or answer any of them!

"What would be your theme song?" -- Nicole Loftus, Zorch

"Can you pull the weight of three people?" -- George Tunis, Hardwire

"Are you a Green Bay Packers fan?" -- Michael Hubbard, Media Two Interactive

"What is on your bookshelf?" -- Vikram Chalana, Winshuttle

"Do you have a problem filling in as janitor for a day?" -- Andrew B. Dwyer, DVS Group

"Define integrity." -- Josef Schmidt, Canvas on Demand

"Do you have a driver's license?" -- Bradley Grubaugh, Bradley Excavating

"Who needs you?" -- Brian Cork, Brian Cork Human Capital

Grimaldi's Pizza

***Update*** I ate at Grimaldi's on Saturday and it IS delicious. The line is outrageous, even longer than Artichoke's; so we decided to order take out (a little insiders trick I was taught). We took our pies down to the promenade to eat and were treated to a true Staten Island wedding photo shoot. We watched as a gaggle of tucked, tight and stuffed bridesmaids waddle around for pictures. Classic. It made my olive and mushroom pizza that much better. I'm not sure if it's BETTER than Artichoke's, because it was a little cold and hard to tell, but I like pizza. I recommend it.

I recently heard that
Grimaldi's is the best pizza in New York, and quite possibly the best pizza in the world. But... what makes a pie AWESOME?

My perfect slice would have light, thin and crispy crust, a lot of sauce and not so much cheese,
and, I like it spicy.

Personally, I am an fan of Artichokes Pizza (see right.) In fact, I blogged about it I like it so much. Their classic slice is loaded with sauce and practically drips into your mouth. Folded in half and pipping hot is the only way to eat it.

The historical Grimaldi's is located under the Brooklyn Bridge near the River Cafe. Patsy Grimaldi started making pizzas back in 1941 with his Uncle. It was 1990 when he and his wife opened this restaurant in Brooklyn. Critics claim this stellar pizza wins because of it's crust; "thin and crisp in the center, blackened and blistered around the dense and bready edges. The mozzarella is fresh, the tomato sauce is fragrant and made at the restaurant, as are roasted peppers. Expect a wait and expect to hear Sinatra playing in the background."

Ok, so, I'm sold. I think a taste test is in order.

Winter Jam

Missing sledding lately? Me too... Now you can get your fix tomorrow at Winter Jam 2009!

Google Oceans

Google Earth is pretty incredible. I remember when it first came out, RMS and I googled almost every place I'd ever been; every apartment I lived in; all my friends apartments; my work-- you get the picture. I dig it. That's my apartment to the right... see me waving??

Well, they just keep doing it. On Monday,
Google announced that you will now be able to explore the oceans, view images of Mars and watch regions of the Earth change over time on Google Earth!!

With Google Earth, we can now dive beneath the ocean's surface, explore three-dimensional images of the underwater terrain and see all kinds of aquatic life like those funny looking prehistoric fish!

The reason I am so excited about this is because of the effect it could have on climate change. At the launch, Vice President Al Gore, singer Jimmy Buffet and others spoke about its capacity to educate the public about global warming, ocean acidification and other environmental threats to our planet.

"This is an extremely powerful educational tool," said Mr. Gore, who won a Nobel Peace Prize for his work raising awareness about climate change. "One of my fondest hopes is that people around the world will use Google Earth to see for themselves the reality of what's happening because of the climate crisis."

The Historical Imagery feature allows us to look back over time and view images of how climate change and other forces have changed our environment. For example, viewers can observe how the largest glacier in Glacier National Park has melted over the past decade, watch the spread of suburbia or erosion of coasts.

Just another way technology is helping save future generations from having to live on Mars.

The Boss... and my American Dream

I don't know about you, but when The Boss tells me to "step away from the guacamole dip and turn up my TV," I listen!

The Superbowl evening was a blast (thanks to Michael and Alison.) And it was even more fun laughing about Just the 8 of Us, round bottoms and Doritos, Fritos and tostitos for 4 straight hours. It was certainly a distraction from the current economic state and gave us an excuse to have a party!! So, can it be true that the Superbowl is recession proof?

Whether you met up with friends in a bar, an apartment or in Tampa; we all watched Bruce Springsteen bounce and slide around the stage like a 20 year old and witnessed one of the most exciting Superbowls I've ever watched!

No, not what you're thinking... It is Gwyneth Paltrow's latest venture, aka, a lifestyle blog. Her motto: "Make your life good. Invest in what's real. Cook a meal for someone you love. Pause before reacting. Clean out your space. Read something beautiful. Treat yourself to something. Go to a city you've never been to. Learn something new. Don't be lazy. Workout and stick with it. GOOP. Make it great."

Snippets blogged about a recent
